From time to time the question arises about the need for slack in automatic pool covers and how much is enough. Regardless of manufacturer, all automatic pool cover fabrics are made wider than the width of the track. There are several reasons for this:

1. A cover that is too tight will pull against the tracks and will not operate properly. A cover that is made too small reduces the life of the cover and mechanism, causing premature failure of both the fabric and the mechanism due to the added stress
2. All fabric shrinks over a period of time. The amount of the shrinkage varies widely according to the type of fabric, how the fabric is manufactured, the temperature of the water, and the weather conditions. Slack is always added to the fabric to compensate for potential fabric shrinkage.
3. In order to meet the ASTM safety standards, The cover must lie on the water, most of the supporting strength of the cover comes from the support of the water directly under it.

Each cover that is manufactured is made with the slack calculated on the basis of the type of fabric, application, and unit. Any other variables that may be brought to our attention are also included. Initially, a properly sized cover will drop almost directly down from the track or deck to the water, with some folds & wrinkles as it crosses the pool. Because each cover is subject to many variables, it is impossible to calculate the exact amount of shrinkage each individual cover will have, so an approximation is made based on our past experience. Our slack formula is designed to give the cover and mechanism maximum life, as well as making the cover look as attractive as possible.

Before an order for any cover which has less than the factory specified slack is processed, we must receive a signed statement from the customer which releases Pool Cover Specialists, from any warranty or safety liability issues which may arise because of premature failure of the fabric or system due to fabric shrinkage.

In some cases, a portion of the slack may be taken up by lowering the water level. However, you should consult with your pool builder or service man before doing so. They can advise you exactly where the water level should be to keep the pool equipment operating properly.

The slack in the front of the cover must be spread over the length of the leading edge, keeping it away from the sides near the tracks. If this is not done, it is possible that the fabric may fold over and get caught in the track.

The leading-edge loop size has been designed to give maximum flexibility in properly installing and servicing the cover.

Free-form shape adds personality to a pool – and used to complicate the application of an automatic cover. Thanks to innovative technology developed by Pool Cover Specialists®, free-form pools pose no design limit for Pool Cover Specialists® automatic covers. This photo demonstrates one of many solutions. The solution: we used the INFINITY 4000™ with a “recessed under track” system and what we call a “Deck-on-deck” design. The “Deck-on-deck” design is where the pool cover track is on an upper deck, and the pool wall resides below that upper deck. A “recessed under track” system is where the motor resides below the pool decking or below ground, hiding the drive mechanism, providing an aesthetically pleasing pool.

The most radical free form shape is probably the L-shaped pool, and depending on the shape of your yard, it may be the perfect configuration of your backyard pool. Although there are various ways in which an automatic cover can be installed on an L-shaped pool, including a single-mechanism installation where the cover is permitted to slide across portions of the deck, an ideal manner in which to cover this type of pool is a dual-cover installation that includes two separate mechanisms. With the turn of a key or the activation of a touch pad control, the two covers simply meet in the middle, providing the same level of security afforded by a single-mechanism installation without the visual distraction of tracks anchored to the top of the pool deck.

If you have a backyard that slopes (is on the edge of a hill), you may wish to consider a vanishing edge (negative edge) pool, where one or more edges of the pool create the illusion of a horizon line (where the ocean meets sky). Sometimes, the effect is similar to that of water appearing to be suspended in air since the vanishing edge side of the pool remains invisible to an onlooker standing on the other side of the pool. The solution: Pool Cover Specialists® developed a “Rail Track Assembly” and unique tracking system that permits the installation of track on the vanishing edge side(s) of the pool without interfering with the vanishing-edge effect or the smooth extension and retraction of the cover.

Raised walls represent a popular way to ensure a creative pool design, particularly in applications where “slope” and variances in “grade” make it difficult to install a pool without incorporating one or more raised walls. The solution: Pool Cover Specialists® developed a “track retainer” that is built into the raised pool wall during construction, permitting the track to remain hidden and “flush” with the wall and creating an aesthetically clean look that hides the track from view and preserves the elegance of the pool environment.

Sometimes a big, cumbersome, heavy, and hard to take on and off Spa Cover just isn’t the right option for you. Many times you need quite a bit of strength to lift and move the standard spa cover available on the market.
